It's less than a week before Christmas, and many people still have a lot to do.
"I am wrapping up some loose ends buying, stocking stuffers and a couple of gifts here and there," said Kim Bishop, a last minute holiday shopper.
The malls around metro Atlanta were packed on Wednesday, providing crooks with plenty of targets.
Earlier in the week, a woman at Perimeter Mall became a victim. Police said a man snatched her purse that contained two new iPhones.
Investigators said the woman chased after the crook, but she stopped when he pointed a gun at her and then jumped into a gray SUV.
"That is very crazy. I would never do that," Bishop said. "There is nothing in this world that is worth valuable possessions over your life, no way."
Police are searching for the gunman, but the shoppers that CBS Atlanta News talked to said they're not depending on police for protection; they're taking precautions themselves.
"You just saw me lock my car so that is No. 1 first and foremost, but other than that, just constantly knowing who is around you," Bishop said.
Another holiday shopper, Charlynn Chamberlin, said it's really easy to get caught up in what you're doing and not pay attention to what's around you.
"You always have to be cautious if there is a van or some outsized vehicle parked next to you," Chamberlin said.
Chamberlin said she wants to believe in the good in people, but has to be realistic.
"At the same time you have to understand there are people out there that won't always be so kind, especially with the economy and people needing money that is sometimes the way they go about things, unfortunately."
