GRAYSON, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Investigators worked late into Wednesday evening trying to find out why a 14-year-old boy was found shot to death in his Gwinnett County home at about 2:30 p.m.
The Grayson High School freshman, Paul Sampleton, was found by his father who immediately called 911.
The boy was at his home on Haynescrest Drive in Grayson after a half day at school. Even though classes had let out for the Christmas Holiday, a Gwinnett County Schools spokesman said Grayson High School would re-open Thursday with grief counselors on hand to comfort students and parents affected by the tragedy.
Police are staying tight-lipped about a possible motive other than to say they're considering several possibilities, but Sampleton's friends worry the shooting could have happened over the sale of some tennis shoes.
The crime rocked the tight-knit neighborhood, especially Stephanie Trudo, who saw the child just the day before.
"I picked him up and dropped him back off at home," said Trudo. "He'd gotten out of high school early and it's just awful."
Trudo's granddaughter, Latajisia Harris, wiped tears from her eyes. She said Sampleton was once her boyfriend.
"He calls me every day after school, today I just didn't get a call," said Harris. "I thought he stayed after school."
Detectives are working to find out if Sampleton interrupted a burglary in progress or if he was the target for a robbery.
