A Powder Springs couple was devastated to learn their 12-year-old roof hasn't lasted nearly half as long as it should have.
Ann Morris told CBS Atlanta News that some of her roof's shingles started shifting not long after she and her husband paid a contractor to install her new roof.
She said the problem eventually got worse, causing leaks in the attic area.
"The shingles apparently turned loose from how they were attached to the roof and slid off," Morris said.
The couple is also dealing with leaks and has since been turned down by their insurance company for a new roof because of the poor workmanship.
The couple can't locate the original contractor and is battling a personal, family illness at the same time.
When roofing contractor Ron Crist with Crist Roofing and Contracting Inc. heard their story, he decided to do the work for free.
Crist told CBS Atlanta News the Morris' story hit home for two reasons. First, he recently lost a loved one to cancer, and second, because a bad roofing contractor makes all contractors look bad.
Crist would like to see the state require roofers to be licensed.
"I believe the Morris' would not have this problem if a licensed, qualified roofer had done the work," Crist said.
He is fighting for that effort along with Phae Howard, with The National Center for the Prevention of Home Improvement Fraud, a nonprofit that educates homeowners on what to look for when hiring a contractor.
