DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis announced his 2013 budget proposal on Friday.
"We're proposing to hire 25 additional police officers," said Ellis.
That's just one of several proposals Ellis put in his budget recommendation. Ellis' proposed $563 million budget also includes a 3 percent raise for county employees whose salary is less than $37,700.
"We can't afford to do that for all employees, but we have some employees in this county that don't even make a living wage. We should not be proud of that, we should be ashamed of that," said Ellis.
Ellis also proposed a slight increase in property taxes. The average home in the county costs about $134,000. They will pay an additional $2.51 a month.
"For the overwhelming number of DeKalb County citizens who have seen a decline in the value of their homes even with this mileage increase, they will be paying less in taxes this year, than they were paying in 2008," said Ellis.
DeKalb County resident Laura Schnelzer said the CEO's budget seems to be in line with the current economic condition.
"I think it's reasonable. I think those numbers are pretty much in line with everything that is going up now. It costs more to live these days," said Schnelzer.
