Georgia Department of Transportation workers reopened all northbound lanes of Interstate 85 near Highway 316 on Thursday afternoon after removing a section of damaged asphalt.
"It's frustration, I think, for everybody," said driver Kevin Rourke. "I think we all have to deal with it. It's a part of life in Atlanta."
Transportation officials said a tractor-trailer carrying pre-fabricated concrete overturned around 9 a.m., losing its 46,000-pound load.
One of the pieces of concrete fell off the truck in the accident, causing damage to the pavement.
"That piece of concrete was really heavy and when it hit the asphalt at 60 some odd miles an hour, it actually gouged out a trench in the asphalt to about a depth of 2 inches," said GDOT spokesperson Teri Pope.
Pope said workers replaced 160 feet of roadway damaged in the accident, leaving at least one lane closed for most of the day.
"It's crazy, but you deal with it day by day when you drive in it and you get used to it," said Eric Cooper who drives in the area.
Workers spent the day not only repairing the roadway, but also removing the concrete slab.
"I don't really try to drive in Atlanta traffic during rush hour; it's just a waste of time," Rourke said.
GDOT officials said all lanes of the highway reopened around 4:30 p.m.
