Portions of a glass window from the 25th floor of the Atlantic Station BB&T building fell early Wednesday morning.
An Atlanta police spokeswoman said an officer was flagged down by Atlantic Station security after glass fell into the sidewalk in front of the building along 17th Street.
Police said all westbound lanes of 17th Street were shut down and officers searched each floor, eventually discovering that a single pane that had fallen.
Workers had covered that window later on Wednesday morning.
But the incident raised questions about safety in the Atlantic Station area, a neighborhood that was designed to be pedestrian friendly.
Earlier this year, several glass panels fell from balconies on The Atlantic, the residential building that is located just blocks from the BB&T building.
Emails sent to residents from May to August explained that some glass panels on balconies had irregularities and had fallen onto the building's pool deck several times.
The Atlantic placed scaffolding over pedestrian walkways as it replaced all potentially dangerous glass panels. Work on that project was completed in August.
Atlantic Station and CBRE management released this statement:
A window on the 25th floor of 271 17th Street fell this morning just before 5:30 a.m. Thankfully, no one was injured, and we have secured the area. The safety of those in and around the building is of our utmost priority. Similar to a car windshield, this type of glass is designed not to shatter but fold and fall when broken. Engineers are removing the remaining glass. Please know that this was an isolated incident and there are no indications of building or window unit structural issues. We are working with APD to get the glass cleaned up and keep traffic moving.
