A DeKalb County judge denied bond for TyAsia Jackson, 13. Jackson's family wanted the judge to grant her bond and release her from jail.
"Prior to her arrest she was enrolled in Cedar Grove Middle School in the eighth grade. She was doing well overall in school," Jackson's attorney Melanie Jackson told the judge.
DeKalb County police arrested Jackson on Nov. 19. She is accused of stabbing to death her 2-year-old sister Sasha Ray.
"The victim child was stabbed approximately seven times in the chest area. One of the stab wounds was to the child's heart and liver. The defendant admitted to the police that she committed the offense," said prosecutor Darius Pattillo.
Jackson's family said she was upset and just snapped because her younger siblings told their neighbor where Jackson's boyfriend was hiding inside their home.
"During her time as a student, she did not have any behavior issues or concerns on behalf of her school or on behalf of her parents," said Williams.
Jackson's family wanted her released to her great grandmother who lives in Macon, but the prosecutor didn't grant their request.
"The state opposes bond in this case because of the heinous and inexplicable nature of the offense," said Pattillo.
Judge Mark Anthony Scott sided with the prosecutor.
"For a 13-year-old to be charged with a crime this serious and no one is offering an explanation about treatment, how she got there? I understand she sits there with a presumption of innocence," said Scott.
Scott told the teen he is concerned she might hurt her great grandmother.
"The reason I'm going to deny bond is because I know the grandmother loves you unconditionally and wants you there, but I need more because my obligation is to protect the public and to protect your grandmother," said Scott.
