The carbon monoxide poisoning at Finch Elementary has forced other area school districts to rethink how to protect their students and teachers.
Gainesville school leaders were terrified after Monday's incident sent dozens of students and teachers to the emergency room for treatment.
Now the district is making carbon monoxide detectors mandatory in all its schools.
"The night that it happened the very next morning after we saw it on the news. I talked to the superintendent and we got together and we ordered these things. We ordered 300 by the next morning," Keith Vincent, operations directors for Gainesville Schools, said.
The cost to the district per detector is $30.
Now school leaders hope that state lawmakers will require the detectors in every Georgia school.
"I would like to see them in all the schools, especially schools that have gas-fed units. I think they need to be in those schools," Vincent said.
The district expects to have the monitors installed in every school by Christmas.
