Many DeKalb County parents and community members said they are fired up over a new plan to reorganize the school district.
The school board will make its final review and vote on Monday, Dec. 10.
"There are some concerns out there," said Megan Burns, a mother of three. "The process and how quickly it's being done. I think those are valid concerns."
District Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson said enrollment has jumped by 800 students during the 2012-2013 school year and that has prompted the administration to come up with a restructuring plan. Some school have empty seats, while others are overcrowded.
However, some community members question why a new plan is on the table when a consultant issued a report on reorganization 18 months ago.
"Her (Atkinson) current plan has no educational benefits whatsoever," said Caroline Lord, a DeKalb resident who does not have children in the district but has closely followed the school system.
Atkinson told CBS Atlanta News the process is transparent.
"There is nothing being slid in or hidden," said Atkinson on Monday. "It's just a matter of timing of when we have to meet the state's requirement in the process and it has to begin."
Atkinson said a final reorganization plan must be approved by next spring.
"My biggest concern is the timing," said Burns. "It is the lack of time to gather support and to gather information from the teachers, the parents, as well as the community."
The school board will meet on Thursday, Dec. 6 to discuss the proposed reorganization before voting on Dec. 10. The plan would take effect in the 2016-2017 school year.
"I think it's a continued black eye," said Lord. "We're just making the black eye bigger."
