Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of an overnight fire that claimed the life of a man staying at a home that was under renovation.
The house on Edith Lane in Lilburn was fully involved when crews arrived just after midnight Monday, according to Capt. Tommy Rutledge with Gwinnett County Fire.
Neighbors told firefighters they believed a man was trapped inside the burning home. Rutledge said crews faced intense fire conditions and a partially collapsed roof while battling the fire.
Once a search team was able to enter the structure, the deceased man was found in a corner room. His identity has not been released.
Rutledge told CBS Atlanta that not only were firefighters faced with deteriorating conditions upon arrival at the scene, but were challenged with an open natural gas line feeding the fire and downed power lines.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation, though Rutledge said investigators do not have any reason to suspect foul play. No other structures were affected by the fire.
