The picture of a missing Colorado teen recently showed up on a Las Vegas escort site.
Kara Nichols, 19, is a lingerie model, living in the Colorado Springs area.
She was last seen and heard from on Oct. 9, telling her roommate she was going to Denver.
El Paso County Colorado authorities said Nichols normally used her cell phone hundreds of times a day with calls and texts and had constant contact with her family.
"All of that contact, all of that use of the cell phone stopped following Oct. 9," said Lt. Jeff Kramer of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
On Nov. 25, an ad popped up on a Las Vegas escort site with Nichols' picture.
Authorities in Colorado said they contacted Metro detectives in Las Vegas and now believe it was someone else posting Nichols' picture.
"In discussion with the authorities there (Las Vegas), they themselves mentioned that what we saw here to play out where someone does in fact use other photos of other people to initially put on the face page of their ads," Kramer said.
These types of tactics, when tied to a missing persons case, is a drain of resources for investigators.
"It did divert some attention from some of our investigators to spend some time running down information on those ads to see if it was going to be legitimate or not," Kramer said. "So it was some time away from some other leads that they could have been dealing with."
Kramer said there is a subculture in the modeling business that involves drugs and prostitution, and they believe Nichols may have fallen prey to that and become victimized.
But with few leads and no sign of Nichols, there is worry.
"We have no proof yet of any foul play, no indication of any foul play," Nichols said. "But, as you know, with any missing persons case, every day that goes by that we don't locate that person, our concern begin to elevate."
Investigators in Colorado are still looking for a mystery woman who was seen with Nichols the day she disappeared.
That woman may have answers to what happened.
At this point, there are more questions than answers.
