Authorities have identified the driver fatally shot by a Dunwoody police officer who was directing traffic near Perimeter Mall during the height of Wednesday's evening commute.
According to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office, the deceased is Bradley Almy, 34, of Dunwoody.
The incident unfolded just after 6 p.m.
Officer Tim Fecht, a Dunwoody Police Department spokesman, told CBS Atlanta News that officers coming out of the evening roll call noticed a driver in the Dunwoody Police Headquarters parking lot driving recklessly.
They followed the black minivan. It pulled into the Exxon gas station parking lot, police said, and struck a number of cars before it drove off and headed northbound on Ashford-Dunwoody Road.
The driver then made a U-turn and headed southbound, where he approached a congested intersection, police said.
"The vehicle then pushed its way through traffic," said Fecht.
"I was so scared because the driver of the vehicle was physically stopped onto my car," said a witness who did not want to be identified. "They (the driver) were going back and forth and back and forth until they got loose."
"It pushed my car over," said another witness who also asked to remain anonymous.
"We had two officers directing traffic due to holiday traffic at the intersection near McDonald's," said Fecht.
The officers saw what was happening and rushed over. Sergeant Jason Dove positioned himself in front of the minivan as it was stopped and shouted commands at Almy, but Almy lurched forward, Fecht said.
"He felt that he was in imminent danger and shot one time," said Fecht.
"I heard a pop," said the second witness. "And then I jumped on the ground."
Dove's bullet struck Almy in the torso, but he kept driving, police said. Almy's van finally came to a stop near an apartment complex on Perimeter Center East.
DeKalb County paramedics rushed Almy to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Dove, who has served with the Dunwoody Police Department since its inception in March 2009, was placed on routine administrative leave as the shooting is investigated.
