Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed was front and center in Chicago during election night. President Barack Obama invited Reed to be his guest at his election night party.
Reed said he was honored to represent Atlanta in Chicago as part of Obama's small circle. Reed said being part of a historic night was "amazing."
Reed said after Obama spoke to supporters, he joined First Lady Michelle Obama and about 30 to 40 others in a small room to celebrate.
"It was jubilant. The first lady was a little more excited that the president. She was beyond happy. The president was a little more mild mannered. He felt real good about the win," Reed said.
Reed campaigned for Obama four years ago and stomped for him again this election. He criss-crossed the country making appearances in Florida and Ohio and on network television.
"I felt like this was as close to a civil rights movement as I was going to be involved in my lifetime. I believe this president earned the right to be re-elected and to be invited to play some role as a surrogate for him, and to campaign on his behalf, meant a great deal to me," Reed said.
Reed put speculation about a position in Washington, D.C. to a rest Thursday afternoon. He made it clear he has no intention of leaving Atlanta. Reed plans to run for another term.
