Emory University confirmed to CBS Atlanta News on Thursday that seven female students told counselors they were sexually assaulted by acquaintances.
During counseling, all seven said that they did not want to initiate investigations, but preferred to remain anonymous.
"I could see if they were put in a position where they did not want to explain themselves, I can see where they would not want to go to police about it," said student Meredith Brockman.
"They might be afraid that if they do come and report them, these boys they know will get in trouble," said student Karoline Porcello.
According to the reports, these incidents occurred in several different locations between August and October 2012, with the exception of two cases that took place in 2011.
Emory University released a statement. In part it reads:
"Emory provides resources and programs to ensure that all members of the community feel safe on campus, and are encouraged to report all incidents of sexual assault so that the appropriate support services can be provided."
Eighteen sexual assaults have been reported so far this year. There were 12 incidents reported in 2011.
