NACA's American Dream event returned to Atlanta on Thursday.
Several hours before the doors opened at the Georgia World Congress Center, people seeking help lowering their mortgages were already in line.
"It's been rough because my husband's hours got cut back, work hasn't been coming in as much," explained Liz Taveris, one of the attendees.
The Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America, or NACA, has hosted three American Dream events in Atlanta this year. It puts homeowners face-to-face with lenders to reduce their mortgage payments. Homeowners walk away with an answer that day. According to a NACA spokesman, some people see their payments drop by hundreds of dollars.
Darren Duarte, NACA's Communications Director, said they would continue returning to Atlanta as long as the need exists.
"There are signs of improvement but the crisis hit so many people hard, there are still a lot of people under water on their mortgages," Duarte said.
The event also helps home buyers. It offers no down payment, no closing costs, no fees, and a below-market fixed interest rate.
The free event is at the Georgia World Congress Center, Building C, through Nov. 12. Doors are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For a list of documents you should bring, go to www.naca.com.
