City officials say the cameras don't make a dent in reducing crashes, and now they're costing the city money.
According to the city of Roswell, fewer drivers are running the red lights at the two intersections with cameras, Highway 9 at Mansell Road and Highway 9 at Holcomb Bridge Road.
Roswell Mayor Jere Wood also says the red-light cameras have done nothing to reduce the number of accidents at the two intersections where they've been installed since 2008.
"Our contracts are up for renewal," said Wood. "Do we wish to renew these? Are they accomplishing the purpose we set out to do, which is to make our streets safer? And we're not making our streets safer, and the justification was no longer there to continue."
Since the cameras aren't having an effect on the number of crashes at the two intersections, the city's transportation committee suggested that city council cancel the contract with the company who operates the cameras.
Wood said even though the program made money in the first few years, the city actually lost money on the cameras during the past two years.
CBS Atlanta News asked Wood if revenue streams were a viable reason to keep the cameras operational.
"It was never revenue," said Wood. "Some folks believe otherwise but it was never revenue."
Even the city's transportation department said the cameras haven't lowered the number of crashes at the intersections.
"Over the time period in which the red lights were in, we did not see a reduction in accidents," added Wood.
The city council could take up the camera issue as early as their next meeting on Monday night.
