A multi-million dollar budget shortfall prompted DeKalb County elected officials to consider closing one of their police precincts.
"Everybody has to do everything that they can to make us more efficient, that's the bottom line," DeKalb County Commissioner Jeff Rader said.
Rader put into motion a proposal to close the north police precinct as a way to save money in next year's budget.
"Obviously we're under a great deal of budgetary pressures so we ought to look at every option that we have to make our operations more efficient," Rader said.
Rader said police officers in the north precinct aren't covering as many beats in the area now that the city of Dunwoody has their own police force and newly incorporated Brookhaven may follow suit.
"We've got about 45 days to get all this stuff in place," DeKalb CEO Executive Assistant Richard Stogner.
Stogner told CBS Atlanta News they will have to decide what to do with the north police precinct located across from Perimeter Mall by December 15. That is their deadline for presenting a budget that must address a near $40 million budget shortfall.
"Is the CEO entertaining this possibility?" CBS Atlanta reporter Adam Murphy asked.
"The CEO told the departments that everything is on the table in terms of this budget," Stogner said.
Stogner said there are roughly 100 officers working out of the north precinct and simply reallocating them would not necessarily trim their budget.
"Could it lead to layoffs for police officers?" Murphy asked.
"We would try and hope to avoid that," Stogner said.
Stogner said closing the north precinct could save them millions.
