COVINGTON, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Police in Covington need your help finding a thief who stole a car in broad daylight.
It happened at the town's Kroger just moments after the victim ran inside to drop something off and now police are hoping some surveillance video helps lead to an arrest.
Police called it a crime of opportunity because there was no break-in and the car was left unlocked and running.
"She was just depositing a movie back into the machine. She was there for just a couple of minutes and vehicle was gone," said Capt. Ken Malcom with the Covington Police Department.
Police said while they were interviewing the victim a cab driver came up looking for a person who called him for a ride. The driver's description and the timing of it all got police thinking.
"I believe individual stated he needed to get transportation very fast and he needed to get to Jonesboro very fast and this vehicle was parked right outside where individual was making claim," said Malcom.
Police immediately went for surveillance video and found a man that matched the cab driver's description. Police aren't calling him a suspect just yet, but he certainly could be the man that jumped in the vehicle and took off.
If it is the suspect, residents said they want him taken off the streets.
"I hope they lock them up and throw away the key," said Wesley Smith.
Paul Davis said they need to make an example of him.
"You can't let people get away with stuff like that. That's not right," said Davis.
Since the man told the cab driver he was going to Jonesboro, police did contact officials there to be on the look out for the stolen Ford F-150. They said it was brown and tan and had four doors.
If you see the truck or recognize the man from the surveillance video call the Covington Police Department.
