The case against a man who has confessed to shooting a police officer and wounding another was sidetracked with another complication.
Jamie Hood was in court Monday for a recusal hearing to determine if the original judge should be removed from the case because of a possible conflict of interest, but the case did not make it that far.
Hood's new lawyer has asked for more time to prepare.
"Your honor, at this time I'm not ready to proceed," said Newell Hamilton, Hood's new lawyer.
Hamilton said he had received the case only last week and that he was not prepared for Monday's proceedings.
Judge David Sweat, who presided over the hearing, was visibly annoyed by the request.
"I am exasperated with the inability to address the motions on the merits," Sweat said. "It seems like the only thing that has happened in this case is delay."
This is the latest delay in a case beset with vexing complications.
Hood earlier this year demanded that the original judge, Lawton Stephens, be removed from the case; openly argued with his attorneys in court as they tried to get him declared psychologically unfit to stand trial; and repeatedly disrupted earlier hearings with frequent angry outbursts.
Hood has admitted to killing Athens-Clarke County police Officer Buddy Christian and wounding Officer Tony Howard.
Stephens has admitted he is friends with Howard, which Hood has argued is a conflict of interest.
Hood is due back in court on Friday.
