Parents of Morningside Elementary School students in Atlanta said they were outraged after dozens of signs volunteers had put up advertising an upcoming fundraiser were destroyed by a neighbor, who said they were posted illegally.
Ron McCord, whose child attends Morningside, said the signs were put up to advertise a Halloween-themed carnival for Saturday afternoon.
"The carnival is a major fundraiser for the school," McCord said. "They generate funds to improve playgrounds, children's activities for recess."
But McCord said those signs were taken down by an unnamed neighbor, and torn to bits by what appeared to be a chainsaw.
"He took the signs out of the ground himself, cut them into little pieces and brought them to the school," McCord said.
McCord said the man claimed the signs were violating a city sign ordinance.
"I'm sure the people who put the signs up didn't realize the signs they put up were in violation of a city ordinance," McCord said. "If they would have known that, they would have done something different."
While the event went well, McCord said he and other parents are still upset about what happened to the signs, which took money away from the event's budget.
"I'm very frustrated. It takes a lot of work and effort, and they're very expensive signs, too," McCord said. "To take some of our funds away for signs that were destroyed is annoying, and this is for the school. He's essentially throwing our money away."
McCord said charges may be filed against the man, who he could not identify.
