ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Thousands of Atlanta women and men came together to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Together women and men raised $4.2 million for breast cancer research, scientific programs and community-based breast health and education programs.
Participants kicked off their three day, 60-mile journey to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer on Friday.
After a long day's journey, some walkers spent the evening at the 3-Day camp with fellow walkers and crew members.
"We are so thankful for Atlanta's continued support of our mission to end breast cancer," said Dr. Sheri Phillips, national spokesperson for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day™. "This is our eighth successful event in Atlanta and we are excited to announce the Komen 3-Day will return to this amazing city for the 2013 Series."
Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds raised by the 3-Day fund national research and large public health outreach programs.
