LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Leaders at the Tabernacle of Christ near downtown Lawrenceville said they are going back to the drawing board after the city's zoning division told them to stop construction of a homeless shelter on church property.
Bishop Harold Anderson said he was told by a zoning official that the shelter does not meet the code for being within a certain distance of downtown.
"We wanted to start out with a shelter for men," said Anderson. "There are not many places for men to go, who are homeless."
"We don't want to do anything to hurt Lawrenceville business, but we also want to help people that are in need."
An official at the city zoning department declined to comment on this story, referring all questions to the mayor's office. Repeated attempts to contact Mayor Judy Johnson were not met with a response.
