DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A DeKalb County husband and wife are crediting their three dogs for saving their lives as a fire destroyed their home early Monday.
John and Carol Snarey were able to escape their burning home on Pine Forest Drive, but were unable to save their dogs.
"They were my babies," said the couple's daughter Elizabeth Snarey. "I loved them. But I think that their barking – they made noise – which got my dad up. Had they not done that, it could have been a lot worse."
Elizabeth said it was about 4:30 a.m. when she got a frantic phone call.
"My mom just yelling, ‘Fire! Fire!' and hung up," she said. "I called 911 and came over and I saw the flames from Clairmont and LaVista. It was pretty big."
John Snarey suffered a burn on his forehead. His daughter described how the burn happened.
"He heard a noise and got up to check and see what it was," said Elizabeth. "And when he opened the door, flames were there."
He yelled to his wife who escaped uninjured, Elizabeth said.
It took a couple of hours for DeKalb County firefighters to get the fire under control. The flames had destroyed the home's kitchen, carport and part of the living room. The couple's two cars also were destroyed.
Elizabeth said the damage would have been worse had it not been for the early morning rain.
"I asked the police officer, 'Are you a Christian? Do you believe in God?' He said, 'Yeah.' I said, 'Only God would make it rain.' They were having a hard time getting the flames down until it started to rain," she said.
Firefighters pulled the three dogs from the home, but could not resuscitate them, according to firefighters.
Firefighters have not determined what caused the fire.
