FORT BENNING, GA (CBS ATLANTA / AP) -
An Army brigade has returned to Georgia after a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan.
Family and friends gathered Saturday at Lawson Army Airfield to welcome home the 648th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade to Fort Benning.
Brigadier Joe Jarrard and Deputy Adjutant General Russell Carlson greeted the soldiers as they came off the plane.
The 125 soldiers in the Columbus-based National Guard unit provided security and support at Camp Phoenix in Kabul during their tour overseas.
Sgt. Marcel Nalls told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that he was "elated, beyond excited" to be home.
1Lt. William Carraway with the Georgia Department of Defense told CBS Atlanta around 100 soldiers of 648th live in the Metro Atlanta area.
