A 5-month-old boy has died and Sandy Springs detectives have obtained a felony murder warrant after the child was allegedly shaken by a babysitter.
Police have issued a warrant for Caris Ayala, 27, in the death of Angel Pantoja.
The warrant was obtained early Saturday after the child died following his removal from life support systems Friday night at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
Ayala, a family babysitter, was watching the child at her apartment Oct. 5 when the child was taken to the hospital by ambulance after reportedly being "unresponsive," according to reports. The injuries to the child prompted CHOA staff to contact police.
Sandy Springs police said Angel had severe brain trauma.
Police said that, at first, Ayala was available and spoke with detectives. She later agreed, through her attorney, to turn herself in, but then absconded prior to meeting with the attorney.
Ayala and her husband, Noe Castillo-Ramirez, along with the couple's 7-month old child are believed to have fled.
Castillo-Ramirez is wanted on a criminal warrant for hindering the apprehension of a felon.
Ayala told detectives she is Guatemalan and police believe that she may be trying to return to Guatemala. Police have notified border patrol and Department of Homeland Security authorities that she is a wanted fugitive.
Ayala was last seen in a black Toyota T-100 with a Georgia tag BKM9384.
Friends of the family, including a neighbor who would only identify herself as Diega, spoke to CBS Atlanta's Sonia Moghe in Spanish.
Police said his parents, Xochitl Carmona and Brai Pantoja, speak little English.
"Yes, for me it's sad because I also have little grandchildren and you never know when an accident may happen," Diega said, in Spanish.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Ayala or Castillo-Ramirez is urged to contact SSPD Detective Sandy Rose at 770-551-3313 or Detective Mike Bailey at 770-551-3308.
The person or persons responsible for the arrest and conviction of Ayala may be eligible for up to $2,000 reward.
