Scene of the robbery
Store clerk speaks to CBS Atlanta's Rebekka Schramm
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A convenience store employee escaped injury, but was terrorized by two armed men who tied him up, robbed the store and stole his car early Thursday morning.
"Just trying to do my shift and go home and go to sleep. That's all," said the victim Esayas Yerge.
Yerge works an overnight shift at "Our Convenience Store" on County Line Road near Campbellton Road in southwest Atlanta. He told CBS Atlanta News that it was about 3 a.m. when he noticed on his surveillance monitor two suspicious-looking men approaching the store. He tried to remotely lock the door, but it was too late. The men shattered the protective security glass at the counter as Yerge ran toward a back room.
"When I tried to close the door, there was a broom in the middle, so it wouldn't close," said Yerge, recalling the gun one of the robbers pointed at his face. "He told me he would shoot me if I don't cooperate."
They tied him up, stole his cell phone, his keys and cash from the register. They left in the victim's car.
Atlanta Police Capt. Adam Lee III said the robbers cut the phone lines to the store. The clerk ran to a nearby Chevron gas station to call for help.
Officers located the car about half a mile away.
"We have a k-9 dog coming out now to try to see if they can get a tracking scent on the subjects that did this," said Lee. "So hopefully if things work out well, we'll be able to locate them."
