A contractor could be seen installing a new flood light just feet from where a Georgia Tech student was robbed.
The grad student was approached by a man armed with a gun as he arrived at his off-campus apartment.
The pedestrian robbery happened about 12:30 a.m. Monday on McMillan Street Northwest, just blocks from the Georgia Tech Campus.
Christian King told Atlanta police a man walked up to him and pointed a gun before taking off with his wallet and iPhone.
According to police, neighbor Denny Burditt witnessed the crime. Burditt told police he took off after the suspect and tried to tackle him. He pulled back after the man pointed a silver handgun at him.
Burditt told CBS Atlanta News he regrets making such a dangerous move. "I should not have taken chase. It was a stupid sting to do. I hope they catch the guy," Burditt said.
The Tech student's landlord installed new lights on and near several apartments in the area. Tenant Samuel Zwaan told CBS Atlanta News he appreciated her taking quick action.
"I don't know if lighting will help. It's good to know that our landlord is taking this stuff seriously," Zwaan said.
Two city streets lights were already nearby.
No one was injured.
The suspect description is vague.
Atlanta police would like for anyone with information to give them a call.
