Govt settles suit filed by deported US citizen

Posted: Updated:

Court documents show that a mentally disabled U.S. citizen who was deported to Mexico has reached a settlement with the federal government to resolve a lawsuit he had filed seeking damages.

A federal judge in Georgia this week dismissed the case after lawyers for Mark Lyttle and for the federal government filed a joint motion saying they'd reached a settlement and asking for dismissal.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which filed the lawsuit on Lyttle's behalf, says Lyttle will receive $175,000 for the suffering he endured.

Lawyers for Lyttle, who was born in North Carolina, filed the suit in October 2010 claiming immigration agents manipulated Lyttle into signing documents allowing his deportation in 2008.

An ICE spokesman did not immediately have a comment.
