ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Fall gardens produce a rich crop of cabbage, onions, and peas, but if your garden's overflowing, what do you do with the excess?

The Atlanta Community Food Bank is encouraging local gardeners to donate their produce.

The food bank operates a community garden in Southeast Atlanta that produces 4,000 pounds of fruits and veggies yearly. That food helps support the WIC program as well as supply mobile food pantries.

Organizers with the food bank said they realize individuals may have similar gardens that could help as well.

"People value the nutrition, and the taste, so it's really lovely to have the opportunity to share that from your garden," said Fred Conrad, Community Garden Coordinator with the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

If you don't have your own garden, but still enjoy working outside, the food bank also relies on volunteers to tend its garden.

"The garden's just a great place to do some thinking and get in touch with yourself and help others. It's a great way to do it," said Sara Dangel, a volunteer who worked in the food bank's garden Thursday morning.

"I know when we're out here working it's going to low-income families, and it's fresh, healthy food," added Jay Singh, also a volunteer.

The food bank also sends volunteers into neighborhoods to teach them how to operate their own community gardens.
