ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Opening statements were expected to begin Wednesday in the trial of four alleged gang members accused of killing a Virginia Highland man.

Tamario Wise, 19, Raphael Cross, 23, Robert Veal, 18, and Fernandez Whatley, 21, are each charged with a variety of crimes in connection with the November 2010 murder of Charles Boyer in Virginia Highland.

The men are alleged members of the criminal street gang the 'Jack Boys.'

Their charges include murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, rape and participation in criminal street gang activity.

The indictment alleges that Boyer's killing occurred during the height of a month-long crime spree spanning from Oct. 19, 2010 through Nov. 27, 2010.

The shooting sent anger and fear through the neighborhood.

"It's very upsetting to be afraid to walk out at night, afraid to put my trash down at the end of the curb at night, fear bullets will come through my house," said Carrie Glazier, who lives near the shooting scene.

In addition to killing Boyer and the rape of a Grant Park woman, the crime wave included 17 armed robberies and six carjackings, impacting residents in Virginia Highland, Grant Park, Ormewood Park, Lakewood Heights, Old Fourth Ward and Benteen Park.
