Mark Melvin/CBS Atlanta- Fire crews extinguished the fire on Dantel Court, but not before the home suffered significant damage.
DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
DeKalb County Fire Fighters responded to a house fire on Dantel Court in Stone Mountain around 4:30 Monday morning.
A mother and her three children were asleep inside the home when fire broke out in the garage area.
Debra Standley said she woke up to see off her husband for work around 4:00, went back to bed, then woke up again smelling smoke around 4:30.
She and her three children were able to safely get out and call for help.
Standley said she almost didn't realize it was actually her house that was on fire.
"I thought it was coming from the neighbors chimney. But as I walked through the house, I saw more smoke, so I just told the kids to get out," said Standley.
A battalion chief with the DeKalb County Fire Department said the fire was contained to one side of the house.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
