Storm causes power outages in metro Atlanta

DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Thousands of power outages were reported across Georgia Tuesday morning after strong winds knocked down trees, taking power lines with them.

A spokesman for the utility told CBS Atlanta News early Tuesday that 5,500 customers statewide were affected. Approximately 1,400 of those power outages were in Atlanta, mostly in the eastern part of the city.

Several trees fell in DeKalb County, knocking out electricity to several areas.

By 8:30 a.m., there were 300 outages in downtown Atlanta.  More than 1,300 outages remained in the Tucker/Stone Mountain area because of a tree that fell onto North Redan Circle near Redan Road just after 1 a.m. As the tree fell, it pulled down power lines, snapping some utility poles.

Georgia Power crews were working to restore electricity to the area.

In Johns Creek, Wilson Road reopened to drivers early Tuesday morning after workers replaced a telephone pole that came down with a falling tree.

In northeast Atlanta, a tree fell onto a car Monday afternoon on Charles Allen Drive near 8th Street. No injuries were reported.
