ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
The Georgia Democratic Party said Monday they will seek to remove state Rep. Rick Crawford as the Democratic nominee in the 16th District after Crawford stated his intention last week to join the Republican Party following the November election.
Crawford is an attorney in Cedartown and was first sworn in to the state House of Representatives in 2007. He said he is switching his affiliation because of what he perceives to be a major shift in the core beliefs of the Democratic Party.
"I'm a person who believes very strongly in traditional marriage, and the Democratic Party has moved further and further away from those values," said Crawford. "When they decided they would publicly endorse same-sex marriage (at the Democratic convention), that was the thing that pushed me over the edge."
"It's obvious that they are firmly committed to their left wing social agenda and they will not tolerate any challenge to it. That means there's no place for me in the Democratic Party."
The state Democratic Party voted unanimously to "pursue all means necessary to remove Rep. Crawford as our Democratic nominee."
