DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Residents of a home for mentally challenged adults returned home overnight to find smoke and flames coming from the structure where one of their housemates was trapped inside.
When DeKalb County firefighters arrived just after midnight Monday, they entered the home and found the man unconscious.
"It did appear that he (had been) in the bed and was able to get out, but not able to get out of the house," said Assistant Fire Chief Garret Smith. "So we did find him and bring him out through a window from the upstairs."
Smith said the man was in stable condition when paramedics loaded him into the ambulance.
"We had one other adult that did receive some burns to his hand," said Smith. "He was also treated and transported to a local emergency room."
The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Smith.
At least four people were displaced by the fire, which originated in the kitchen area.
