DECATUR, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A man suspected of driving under the influence is lucky to be alive after wrapping his car around a pole.
It happened in DeKalb County on Sunday morning around 5 a.m. on Panthersville Road. Police said the man was drunk and speeding when he lost control of his car, took out a pedestrian cross walk sign, and smashed into a pole.
The car was almost cut in half, but police said the man surprisingly only suffered some cuts to his ribs.
Witnesses said the wreckage was so bad they thought two or even three cars were involved and they thought for sure it was fatal.
Deborah Robertson saw the wreckage shortly after it happened.
"I'm surprised. I am very much surprised that someone survived. It was so bad that all I could think was someone is going to have a bad morning, 'cause someone was going to have to be told their relative had died. That's how bad it looked," Robertson said.
The wreck did knock out traffic lights, but crews were on the scene within just a few hours to get the power turned back on.
