Latay Mays was waiting at a bus stop on Confederate near Moreland Avenue when she saw an SUV crash into a Zesto restaurant Wednesday morning.
"I started crying. I was afraid somebody might have been dead. I didn't know if the person that went through there was dead. I saw a lady get out of her car and run. I was kind of emotional because of everything that was going on," said Mays.
Senior Georgia State Patrol Trooper Larry Schnall said Shemicka Nichole Fillmore, 33, who was driving a Lincoln Navigator crashed into the building during a four-vehicle accident.
Schnall and a trainee were parked across the street from Zesto when it happened.
"We partially saw the Navigator go airborne into Zesto. My first reaction was, 'Wow, if this place was open for business someone could have been seriously injured or multiple fatalities,'" said Schnall.
Investigators said three vehicles were stopped in line on Confederate Avenue headed east and waiting on the light to change.
Betty Jean Clark, 55, was driving a red Ford Expedition traveling southbound on Moreland Avenue and making a right turn onto Confederate Avenue.
The Expedition struck the vehicles at the light, sending the Navigator into the restaurant.
"We're not confident that speed was involved, just trying to determine what happened. It could have been an inappropriate or improper turn. Somebody could have caused that driver to lose control," said Schnall.
Three people were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
