CBS Atlanta gets action: Atlanta Water Department to eliminate brown water

Posted: Updated:
FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Construction workers finally got to the bottom of a dirty dilemma affecting homeowners in Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward on Friday.

"It's me, my wife and my dog, and none of us are drinking the water," homeowner Ray Ellis said.

CBS Atlanta News first exposed the problem of dirty water in the neighborhood last April.

Ellis took cell phone video to prove there's a problem, and he isn't the only one complaining about brown water.

"I almost drank that water," homeowner Melynda Stylistik said.

Stylistik lives up the street and noticed the same thing.

However, residents were pleased to see the city put a stop to the problem on Friday.

Watershed Management began replacing old water mains on Willoughby Way, something it will do at more than 50 locations this month.

"We're happy that the city is making investments in the quality of the water for the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood," Homeowner Cora Peterson said.

"Yes, it will be much nicer to come home to a clear glass of water versus a yellow glass of water," homeowner Rachel Burke said.

Other neighborhoods on tap for improvements like this include Candler Park and Poncey-Highland where residents will soon see their tax dollars hard at work.

"The constructions crews have been really kind and thoughtful, and it's a small price to pay for good water," Peterson said.

Workers on scene told CBS Atlanta News that it will take about a month to complete the project on Willoughby Way.

They also said the improvements will eliminate the discolored water and also improve water pressure.
