ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A Georgia State Trooper is on administrative leave after shooting a driver during a traffic stop.

A GSP spokesperson told CBS Atlanta News the trooper stopped Cardal Haywood, 20, for following too closely on Salem road in Conyers.

"The vehicle turned into the driveway at the Quick Trip. At which point the trooper pulled alongside to block the exit at the driver's side. The suspect exited the vehicle on the passenger side and pulled out a weapon. The trooper fired, hit the suspect in the thigh," Spokesman Gordy Wright said.

It happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. in the 2400 block of Salem Road.

The officer is doing well. Haywood is recovering from a gunshot wound to the thigh.

Metro PCS Salesman Will Jackson, whose store sits right in the middle of the shooting scene, was busy stocking shelves when he heard the shots.

"I kinda like stopped and froze for a minute. Then I heard an officer's voice like, 'freeze or get down,'" Jackson said.

Jackson didn't know what led to the shooting, but he's glad no one else was hurt.
