LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
The Gwinnett County Probate Judge said his department is seeing regular long lines as people come in greater masses for birth certificates, weapons permits and marriage licenses. Judge Jim Clarke said they haven't been given money by the county to hire a new employee in five years.
"That volume (of birth certificate requests) has increased, I believe, approximately 48 percent this year," said Clarke.
Part of the reason so many more people are coming for birth certificates is because of new requirements by the state in the driver's license renewal process.
Clarke said they need to hire more people if they're going to keep up with growing demand.
"It will cut down on the lines that people are having to stand in," he said.
The first draft of the Gwinnett County budget for 2013 is due out in November.
