Former Gwinnett commissioner's son gets 5 years

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (AP) -

The son of a former Gwinnett County commissioner and another man were each sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison on charges stemming from a bribery scheme.

Former Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, her son John Fanning and an associate, Carl "Skip" Cain, pleaded guilty in May in a scheme to accept bribes in exchange for Lasseter's influence and vote for a proposed real estate development in her district.

Fanning and Cain were sentenced Tuesday to four years and nine months in prison. They were charged in the bribery scheme and also were accused of conspiring to traffic cocaine.

Lasseter was sentenced earlier this month to two years and nine months in prison.

Prosecutors have said all three are cooperating with authorities in an ongoing investigation into corruption in Gwinnett County.
