Adam Smith
BUFORD, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Buford High School junior Adam Smith was doing preseason conditioning with his basketball team when he collapsed on Thursday said Banks Bitterman, his school principal.
"Walked up to him and said 'I'm not feeling well' and then he collapsed," Bitterman said.
Smith died on Sunday. His death is the second to hit the high school's athletic department this year, after beloved football coach Ryan Daniel died of a heart attack on campus in January. Bitterman said community support has helped during the tough year.
"When something happens in Buford, the community rallies together," he said.
Bitterman said Smith was a model student athlete and well-liked.
"When you saw him he was always smiling, always happy," Bitterman said.
He added that he still didn't know what caused Smith's death and that his family may never know because it opted to donate his organs.
"Fifteen different people are going to be affected by his life or have a better way of life because of him," Bitterman said. "Right now is the time we are going to join together and love each other and lift Adam up, lift his family up."
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel.
A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church Buford. Burial will follow in Broadlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Adam Blake Smith Scholarship Fund at Peoples Bank and Trust in Buford.
