ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The Marietta Police Department is investigating a home invasion that happened early Sunday morning.

An unknown man entered a home on Hazel Street and assaulted the elderly female homeowner, according to police.

The suspect made verbal threats to physically harm her if she did not cooperate. Officer David Baldwin with Marietta police told CBS Atlanta News that the victim feared for her life and gave into the suspect's demands.

"He suspected the woman would be at home because he was able to physically accost her, going at her while she was asleep, and that he was willing to use any type of violence necessary if he demands weren't met," Baldwin said.

An unknown amount of cash and jewelry were taken from the home.

The woman was taken to and eventually released from Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Family members of the elderly woman didn't want to comment on the incident. Neighbors of the victim did voice their concerns for her safety and the violent nature of the attack.

"Someone would take advantage of someone like that," said a neighbor, Meredith Dixon.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Parker at 770-794-5380.
