Libyans in Atlanta honor victims of embassy attack

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Members of the Libyan American Association of Georgia held a candlelight vigil Saturday night in downtown Atlanta in honor of Libyan Ambassador Christopher Stevens and former Navy SEALs Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty as well as computer expert Sean Smith.

"Chris Stevens was very loved, he was one of us. A lot of people are very upset that we lost someone so special and dear to us because he was really the one that was promoting and really encouraging the U.S. government to get more involved in Libya," said Nadia Mahmoud, a member of the Libyan American Association of Georgia.

"We are really sorry and embarrassed for what happened to him and the other Americans who lost their lives in Libya," said Juma Khamis, the executive director of the Libyan American Association of Georgia.

Members of the group say they are troubled by the increasingly violent anti-American demonstrations that are popping up around the world.

"In the last few years there have been a very good advance and step forward between the Muslim world and the United States and those people are trying to stop this from going forward," said Khamis.

Despite all that's happened Mahmoud and Khamis believe better days are ahead for their native land.

"This was a major wake up call. We didn't think the security situation had gotten that out of control, but I have faith we can get back to where we were. If we were able to get Khadafi out with the help of NATO and our own people, we can take care of this problem," Mahmoud said.
