ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A construction company has begun prep work to stabilize fencing on the 17th Street Bridge, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Massana Construction started working on the bridge on Wednesday. Full construction should occur in the next few weeks.

In August 2011, a piece of decorative fencing fell off the bridge onto I-75/85 below. No one was hurt in the accident.

The south pedestrian sidewalk on the bridge was immediately closed.

Following the incident, GDOT hired an independent contracting firm to investigate whether the fencing had been properly installed.

After the investigation, GDOT said the fencing fell because of faulty glue, causing the fence's anchor bolts to separate from the bridge over time.

Once full construction begins, Massana Construction will not use glue to help hold the fencing bolts to the bridge. Rather, the bolts will be bolted through the wall of the bridge.
