HENRY COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A father and son were shot after walking in on two masked gunmen burglarizing their Henry County home Tuesday night.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. in the 1200-block of Edison Drive, near Flat Rock Road.

"If I came in and saw somebody in my house, I'd freak out," said Berkeley Harris who lives nearby.

Police identified the victims as Ronnie Cantrell Sr., 68, and Ronnie Cantrell, Jr., 42. Both victims were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and underwent surgery. As of Wednesday morning, the father was listed in critical condition. The son suffered non-life threatening injuries.

"It's upsetting to hear something like that would happen within this neighborhood. And it's really sad, and I hope everybody's okay, and our prayers go out to the family," said Eric Meland, a neighbor.

Police said one homeowner returned fire, wounding one of the suspects. Police identified that suspect after he arrived at Piedmont Henry seeking treatment for his wound. They said they also have three other suspects and are following up on leads. They believe the men were driving a 2013 Black Kia Rio, which has been recovered. Police have not released the suspects' names.

They also said one of the burglars had a shotgun.

Police were trying to determine what, if anything, was stolen from the home.
