The man Gwinnett County police say stabbed and killed his own mother made his first court appearance Thursday morning.
Mark Wilson, 42, was not granted bond.
Wilson was taken into custody without incident at a convenience store along Grayson Highway at about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers found Wilson's vehicle less than two miles from the crime scene at a QuikTrip gas station.
Authorities throughout Georgia were on the lookout for Mark Wilson who they believe stabbed his mother, Phyllis Wilson, 72, and then drove off in her car.
Gwinnett County investigators told CBS Atlanta News that Phyllis Wilson's husband returned to their home with a caregiver at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and discovered her body on the floor near a bathroom.
"He didn't know that she had the trauma about her body," said Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter. "It came out as a med call."
Paramedics arrived at the home on Simonton Glen Way near Lawrenceville and confirmed she was dead. At first, detectives weren't sure whether her death was caused by injuries from some sort of accidental fall or if she had been killed.
"There is a vehicle that's supposed to be here that's not here right now." Ritter said Tuesday afternoon. "We're unsure if the son who also lives in the residence is in possession of the vehicle."
Investigators from the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office later determined that Phyllis Wilson died from stab wounds. Late Tuesday night, police issued arrest warrants for Mark Wilson.
Police said Mark Wilson suffers from schizophrenia.
Mark Wilson's preliminary hearing is set for September 25.
