ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

In the Metro Atlanta area, several tributes took place to remember the victims of the terrorists attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Nearly 3,000 Americans, including 343 firefighters and 60 law enforcement officers lost their lives during the attacks that day.

Today is about remembering those loved ones left behind, as well as those who still risk their lives to protect us today.

Dozens of people gathered for Lilburn's first-ever 9/11 ceremony.

The ceremony started around 8:30 a.m. in Lilburn City Park.

Mayor Johnny Crist, who took office in January, said it's important for people to remember this day, especially considering how many people in our area were impacted by those events.

Crist lost a friend when the towers came crashing down.

The ceremony includes the unveiling of steel from an actual I-beam support of the World Trade Center.

Milton High School honored the victims of 9/11 by setting up nearly 3,000 flags with the name of a person that died on each flag.

A ceremony began at 7:45 a.m.

The DeKalb County Police Department and DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department conducted a brief ceremony.

DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis and members of the DeKalb County Commissioners were in attendance.

The ceremony started at 8:40 a.m.

Firefighters and police officers remembered the attacks, and dedicate a memorial to the Fulton County Public Safety heroes who've lost their lives serving their community.

Fulton County Fire Rescue, Police, Marshals Departments along with the Sheriff's Office joined forces to hold a dedication ceremony for the "Circle of Honor" Public Safety Memorial.

The ceremony started at 10 a.m. at Wolf Creek in College Park.

Students at Georgia Tech held their own memorial service Tuesday morning.

Students campus-wide honored the memory of the victims and survivors of the terrorist attacks with a display of close to 3,000 American flags and an accompanying remembrance ceremony.

The flags are prominently displayed in the center of campus.

The memorial service began at 11 a.m. in front of the Skiles classroom building on campus.
