CLAYTON COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Clayton County students will head to class Tuesday knowing big changes are on the way.
The board Monday night voted to accepted the resignation of Superintendent Edmond Heatley, two years before his contract was up. In light of his departure, the board also decided to table a vote that would have allowed students to leave class early once a week.
Heatley was the force behind wanting to add "Early Release Wednesday", which would have let students out of school up to 90 minutes early to give teachers administrative time.
Board members and many parents didn't like the idea, calling it a "big inconvenience".
During the meeting, some parents spoke out, calling for better leadership and more transparency with the board.
"I'm disappointed, and I'm also dissatisfied with our leadership, but more so with our board for allowing the ill governing of our school system," said one parent who has three children in the school district.
The board's vote to table the issue was well received by those who attended the packed meeting.
"I think they feel like whoever comes in as the new super would need to have some input on that," said David Waller, the public information officer for the district.
The board voted in Luvenia Jackson as interim superintendent. Jackson currently works as the liaison for the juvenile courts and the school district.
Heatley's last day is set for the end of September.
Jackson will start the very next day.
