NORCROSS, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Several dozen people gathered at the Sante Fe mall in Norcross Sunday for a forum held by immigration lawyers. The forum was aimed at answering questions about President Barack Obama's executive order that allows many illegal immigrants who came to country as children to avoid deportation.
The order went into effect last month, but many people are unsure whether to try to take advantage.
"We're still trying to figure out some things," said Maria Duarte of the Hispanic advocacy group GALEO. The organization helped pull together the panel of immigration experts for Sunday's forum.
"There is some confusion," said Duarte. "It's new, people feel the urge or the pressure to apply right away."
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act does not allow for a path to citizenship but delays a possible deportation by two years for people who qualify. Those who apply must have been brought to the states before they were 16 years old, and be under the age of 31 before the start of this summer among other requirements.
Duarte said it could be a risky process for many people because there is no appeal allowed following a denied application.
