MARIETTA, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified the man killed by police after investigators said he committed a robbery and fled from officers on Interstate 75.
The man was identified as 53-year-old Jerome George "Jerry" Cundy of Woodstock.
Cundy was shot and killed by police Sunday morning on the highway in Cobb County. The incident caused major traffic backups from Chastain Road to Canton Road.
It all started when Woodstock police began following a suspect's vehicle after an armed robbery at the Marathon gas station located on Bells Ferry Road at Victoria Road in Cherokee County.
The owner of the gas station talked to CBS Atlanta News about the robbery, but did not want his name used. He said that an armed man approached his cashier.
"He showed the gun and he said, 'Give me the money,'" the owner told CBS Atlanta News.
The owner said the robber hit his gas station shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
"One of my employees gave him the money, and he quietly walked out," the owner said. "Cooperation is always, I always tell my employees."
Investigators said the suspect vehicle matched the description of one related to an armed robbery earlier in the morning in Cobb County.
After chasing the Cundy, police attempted a traffic stop, but said Cundy refused to stop and took off headed south on the highway, where Cobb County police performed a PIT maneuver and his the car.
That's when investigators said Cundy was shot and killed by police after he pointed his weapon at officers at the scene.
Because the incident was an officer-involved shooting, GBI agents will investigate the case.
